Ruth Johnson Proffitt, 84, of Lynchburg passed away Friday, October 14, 2016, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Elwood Joseph Proffitt. Born September 26, 1932, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Miller Jennings Johnson and the late Ada Kidd Johnson.

Ruth was a retired shoe pattern maker for Craddock Terry Shoe Corporation and a member of Elon Baptist Church.

Ruth Johnson Proffitt, 84, of Lynchburg passed away Friday, October 14, 2016, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Elwood Joseph Proffitt. Born September 26, 1932, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Miller Jennings Johnson and the late Ada Kidd Johnson.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ruth was preceded in death by two brothers, Miller T. Johnson and William L. Johnson, Sr.; and one sister, Marie J. Kidd.

Ruth is survived by her two daughters, Linda Hughes (Harry) of Lynchburg and Susan VanRemortel (Jim) of Evington; one son, E. Wayne Proffitt (Rhonda) of Forest; one sister, Nancy J. Ripley of Burkeville; one sister-in-law, Juanita Johnson of Fishersville; four grandsons, David M. Wilson (Jennifer), Colby Proffitt, Ryan Martin and Jacob VanRemortel; one step grandson, Jason Thompson; two step granddaughters, Kim Hughes (Jerry Crosby) and Lori Siebel (Rich); two great grandchildren, Brianna Wilson and David Wilson; two step great-grandchildren, Brett Siebel and Bailey Siebel; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was also a nanny to numerous families with the most recent to the Chiodo family: Meghan Chiodo, Monica Chiodo, Addison Chiodo and Justin Chiodo.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Johnson, Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel prior to processing to the cemetery and at other times at the residence of Harry and Linda Hughes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Arthritis Foundation or Elon Baptist Church.
