The Rev. Herman A. Dowdy, 95, graduated to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 16, 2017.

He was the son of the late James and Nellie Dowdy of Farmville, Virginia. He grew up in Farmville, lived and worked in Richmond for 55 years, and spent the last four years in Lynchburg, Virginia. As a WWII Army veteran, he served in the Asian theater. He graduated from Washington Bible College in DC and completed graduate work at Bob Jones University in SC.

Pastor Dowdy served churches in Maryland and in Farmville before being called to Pastor Gospel Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia where he spent 25 years in ministry. Pastor Dowdy boldly proclaimed the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all he met. God used his warm and outgoing personality and his compassion for others to win countless souls for Christ.
Mr. Dowdy served as Virginia State Manager of The Great Commonwealth Life Insurance Co. while also teaching an adult Bible class at Immanuel Baptist Church in Richmond. He was also President of the Independent Baptist Fellowship of Richmond.

Mr. Dowdy is survived by his lovely wife of 69 years, Leah C. Dowdy and their 3 children: Donna Faber of Greer, SC, Daniel Dowdy of Lynchburg and Deborah Brown of Andrews, NC, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to Gospel Baptist Church at 1300 Turner Road, Richmond, Va. 23225.
